FAQs For Open-Mic Night At The Tower Theatre

Q:  Is it a regular Open-Mic for poetry and song and the like?

A:  No.  We call it Open Mic, but it's actually more of an Open Screen-- we show short films by local filmmakers on the big screen.  It operates much like an Open Mic, in that you show up with your film, sign up, and show it.

Q:  How long (running time) can the shorts be?

A:  We strongly encourage films under 10 minutes in length.  Films one second over 15 minutes in length will be turned away.  (Note: although we encourage them, films under 10 minutes in length will receiver no special consideration for programming; this is a first-come-first-served operation.)

Q:  When do you accept submissions?

A:  From 6-8pm on the night of the event.  Keep in mind, however, that the available time slots are limited and programming gets pretty competitive.  If you don't show up to turn in your film early, you will miss out.  Slots are usually filled up by 6:20pm.

Q:  How many films may I submit?

A:  One per filmmaker.

Q:  What are the acceptable formats?

A:  DVDs and VHS tapes.  We prefer DVDs with no menus.  But whatcha gonna do?

Q:  How much does it cost?

A:  $5 to submit a film, $1 to attend.

Q:  Are the films shown in the order they were turned in?

A:  No.  We show them in random order.  And we encourage everybody to stick around for the whole event.  Support your fellow filmmakers.

Q:  How are the films chosen?

A:  This is a first-come-first-served operation.  No special consideration is given to any particular film for any particular reason, save the time it was turned in to us.

Q:  How long is the event?

A:  We try to keep it between 1 1/2  to 2 hours in length.

Q:  What is the Salt Lake Film Society (SLFS)?

A:  Please visit www.saltlakefilmsociety.org
