Buying Your Very First Guitar
Purchasing your first guitar could be a very exciting experience. But hold on to your reigns before you start to pick up any guitar on the shelf. There are so many choices to choose from and you wouldn’t want to end up wrong, would you? Here are some simple tips teaching you on how to buy the guitar of your dreams:
- You need to know your budget. You are not yet a superstar, so try to keep your budget to a minimum. You can get a guitar for $200-$300. Second-hand guitars can suffice also, go to your local pawn shop and used dealers. The price of the guitar does not determine its worth. It doesn’t mean it is expensive, it is good. On the other hand, be careful of guitars that are too cheap, they can be poorly-made and will have very poor sound quality.
- What kind of guitar do you need? Is it an electric or acoustic guitar? Your answer to this question will greatly rely on the genre of music you want to learn. If you’re into rock music, an electric guitar is advisable. If it is classical or country music that you’re inclined to, acoustic guitar would be best. Usually, acoustic guitars are more apt for beginners and considered to be less expensive than an electric guitar.
- Do your research. There are various brands and models of guitars in the market and you must do your research well before purchasing the guitar of your choice. Surf the net to check out music stores, ask the store clerk questions or you can find someone close to you that has been playing the instrument for a while. Ask for their advice about what types of guitar to look for and which to avoid.
- Play before pay. To know what you are about to get, play the guitar before you pay for it. It would be a grave mistake if you fail to do this. Bring along a friend who plays a guitar to several shops and stores to help you. Your beginner ear may not recognize subtle tone qualities unlike those who play the guitar more often.
- Feel. Ask the clerk if you can try out the instrument. Most of the time, you can tell something about the quality of the instrument by its feel and performance. Check if you are comfortable playing the guitar. Try several guitars sitting and standing. If they don’t feel natural to you, even a bit, they may not be the guitar for you. Don’t be shy to try several guitars till you find the one that feels ‘right’ in your hands and body.
When you already decide to buy, remember to ask for a warranty, a new set of strings, a tuner and a gig bag. Being a new guitarist, it is necessary to have a gig bag and a tuner so it is wise for you to buy one. Some stores leave the factory strings on the guitars for a long time, depriving them of bright tone; new strings will solve the problem perfectly.
