She’s Just not the Creative Type….   by Joystickenvy

Growing up, I was the smart kid, while my sister was the creative one. I was good at math, she was good at drawing. I spent a year each in band and choir, but for the most part I was pigeonholed as the practical, logical one who would go on to be an accountant or some other such mundane occupation.

The overwhelming message I received from my parents and grandparents was that I didn’t have any artistic talent or creativity. This message was reinforced into adulthood by my friends who considered themselves the “artistic” sort and labeled me as practical, logical, boring and lacking in “talent.”

Indeed, that is how I always saw myself. In spite of the fact that I loved to write, sing, dance, etc. I felt like I was too lacking in talent and creativity to ever pursue any of these activities. Because of my self view that I just didn’t have the creativity or talent to succeed in a creative hobby, I was afraid to even try. My fear of being laughed at or dismissed by the “real” artists paralyzed me and for years while I would often sing in the car or around the house, I wouldn’t even sing “Happy Birthday” in public.

Somewhere in my twenties, I discovered Bluegrass music. I learned to play the guitar, mandolin and banjo to varying degrees and even began to sing in public. Some of the people I played with weren’t that supportive and caused me to doubt myself and question if I just didn’t have what it takes to do something creative, but most were very helpful and encouraged me to keep at it, even thogh I wasn’t very good. While, I still don’t consider myself to be particularly good, I have progressed far beyond what I once would have considered possible and have found great enjoyment in the personal expression playing music allows. I now have no problems getting up and singing in front of a crowd and people who knew me before are always commenting that they just never knew I had any “creative talent” in me.

The confidence I gained through playing music opened my mind to the possibility of trying other hobbies that I once thought I had too little talent to succeed in. I’ve started designing products for a print on demand company, writing articles, blogs and Squidoo lens and designing my own website.

I may not be the best there is in any of those categories, but I’ve come to discover that you don’t have to be the brightest talent to enjoy doing something creative and that no matter what your “talent” level is, you can get better if you work at it.

So, to all you untalented, non-creative types out there, don’t be afraid to get out there and start creating. If you enjoy it, keep doing it and keep striving to get better and don’t worry about whether your work is “good enough,” just have fun with it. You might surprise yourself.
